Unlike "Sons," there is more ethnic conflict here (Latino culture versus white majority) and family drama (EZ's relationships with his brother Angel and father Felipe).
The series evolves from a crime epic to a tragedy, echoing the Shakespearean formula of the original, but with a focus on immigration, drug cartels, and betrayal. The tone is dark, with a heavy use of Spanish and Mexican mythology (Day of the Dead, culture of veneration).
