The confrontation between Ireland and Great Britain has lasted for centuries. As is often the case, religion is to blame. Irish Catholics will not accept the supreme authority of heretical Protestants, trying to detach themselves from Great Britain. The Empire itself, and later just the kingdom, has long considered the Irish peninsula its own domain and does not want the separation of these historically British lands.
What is the series Ghosts of the Past about?
The confrontation between Ireland and Great Britain erupted into demonstrations in the 1970s, followed by attempts to violently suppress these so-called "peaceful" demonstrations. This event is remembered by the world as "Bloody Sunday." An organized extremist movement called the Irish Revolutionary Army adopted terrorist methods of struggle, breaking away from the main movement for the freedom of Ireland. Only in 1998 was a mutually acceptable agreement reached, according to which the armed confrontation ceased.
But before that, in those turbulent times for both states, there was a figure known as "Goliath," responsible for more than one crime. He chose as his victims those political figures and their relatives who voted for a peaceful resolution of the issue between the government of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
A lot of water has passed since then when Tom Brennick again encounters the echoes of those events. He is also a victim, as his wife died back then, leaving him with a daughter. Now, in modern times, that same killer has shown his face again, pursuing new victims. Brennick, along with his partner, must catch him and try to hide what should not be seen by everyone. Several people have been kidnapped, their condition threatens and blackmails high-ranking government officials, and the handwriting is exactly the same as it was thirty years ago.
Tom Brennick is a police officer whose dark past echoes in his behavior in the present. He confronts his past cases while trying to find the kidnapped person. The role is played by James Nesbitt.
Jackie Toomey is a police superintendent, an old acquaintance of the main character. He constantly urges the main character to drop the investigation, putting the brakes on it. The role is played by Lorcan Cranitch.
Niamh McGovern is a police inspector, the main character's partner. She notices oddities in the main character's behavior while conducting the search for the kidnapped person. The role is played by Charlene McKenna.
Claire Kinnon is the wife of the kidnapped political figure. The role is played by Catherine Cora Clark.
