Why It's Worth Watching

Watch if "The Stag" struck a chord — this is the same author, but with an even more mature perspective on family trauma and male aggression disguised as love.

Description

BBC One and HBO jointly release on April 24, 2026, a six-part drama about two brothers whose lives unravel after a reunion at one of their weddings. Richard Gadd, creator of the acclaimed "The Stag," writes and stars as Ruben, the estranged brother who shows up uninvited and causes an explosion that sends shards throughout their history. Jamie Bell plays Niall, the successful brother whose perfect life is a facade. The timeline spans forty years — from the 1980s to the present day, showing how the boys, who found each other in a foster home, grew into adults unable to forgive. The atmosphere is "This English Day" meets "Sharp Objects": the suburbs of Glasgow, family secrets, and physical violence that escalates into psychological. Filming took place in Scotland during the winter of 2025, adding a gray and damp quality to the footage. For those who watched "The Stag" and want to understand where Gadd's insight into toxic relationships comes from — the autobiographical elements are even thicker here, although the plot is fictional.

Interesting facts
01
Richard Gadd wrote the script in six weeks after finishing "The Stag," drawing on personal experience with foster relationships — his character Ruben is partially based on a real half-brother.
02
Jamie Bell and Gadd rehearsed fight scenes with a choreographer who worked on "Bondiana," to make the wedding fight look chaotic but safe for the actors.
03
Filming began in February 2025 in Glasgow, where real neighborhoods built in the 1980s were used as sets — the city itself became a museum of the era.
04
Directors Alexandra Brodski and Eshref Reybrouck make their feature debut — previously, they had only directed short films and episodes of series.
05
The series employs a "dual time" technique — the young brothers are played by Stuart Campbell and Mitchell Robertson, who auditioned together to accurately convey the brotherly chemistry.
