What is the series The Serpent about?
The mid-seventies, half-Vietnamese, half-Indian Charles Sobhraj, along with his beloved Marie-Andrée Leclerc, uses drugs and ingratiates himself with travelers who have chosen Thailand and Bangkok for their vacation, and then robs them. To avoid leaving witnesses, Charles kills his victims and uses their documents for seamless movement from one country to another. Charles is known for selling various gemstones at reasonable prices, which is why he has plenty of clients for the stolen jewels. But he does not operate under his real name, but under the alias Alain.
Young Dutch couple Willem and Helena go on vacation to East Asia, after which they lose contact with their relatives. Upon learning of this, a young clerk working at the Dutch embassy in Thailand, Herman Knippenberg, volunteers to help search for the missing tourists. Soon he comes across Alain, whom the couple mentioned in their last postcard…
