The time between the First and Second World Wars was not the best for Germany. The state was forced to pay huge reparations. One hundred thousand tons of gold cannot be accumulated overnight, especially for a state that has no mining resources. This led to the sabotage of payments and was one of the reasons for the outbreak of the Second World War.
What is the series Babylon Berlin about?
The golden age of the Weimar Republic is coming to an end, a frenzied non-commissioned officer is already raising his head, Ernst Thälmann is running through the streets of Berlin. A gloomy and dark atmosphere. Berlin seems to sense the next fifteen years of darkness and horror that will soon descend upon it. Not having recovered from the First World War, Germany is striding towards the next, no less bloody, and far more terrifying.

At this time, a commissioner from Cologne arrives in the capital's streets, investigating the blackmail of a prominent political figure. He was filmed in the act of intercourse with a young courtesan, and now there is pressure regarding the potential public disclosure of this fact, which could severely damage his reputation and, consequently, his career.

Gideon Rath is a veteran of the First World War, suffering from post-traumatic syndrome, periodically experiencing flashbacks of those events and tremors from everything happening. His partner is a young stenographer, a native Berliner. Besides her official job, she spends her nights at the local club Moka Efti, where the highest pay is offered for young and pliable female bodies. The work is illegal but profitable, and the main character keeps this hidden from the public.

Their investigation turns out to be quite strange and convoluted, bringing political dirt to light, forcing them to confront drug trafficking and use. They are hindered by powerful and influential people who would be obstructed by the completion of the investigation, as it would also topple them from their positions of power. Ultimately, the heroes find themselves embroiled in the confrontation between Trotskyists and Stalinists, fighting for the proletariat on the streets of Berlin.

Gideon Rath is a veteran of the First World War, working as a commissioner in Cologne. He is dispatched to Berlin to investigate the blackmail of a prominent political figure. The role is played by Volker Bruch.
Charlotte Ritter is a young stenographer who sells her body at the most famous nightclub in Berlin at night. She becomes the main character's investigative assistant. The role is played by Liv Lisa Fries.

Alfred Nissen is a descendant of an industrial dynasty, one of the conspirators of the Black Reichswehr. The role is played by Lars Eidinger.
Helga Rath is the wife of the main character's brother, who is presumed dead. Gideon's lover, the mother of the main character's nephew. She arrives in Berlin after hearing about her husband's death. The role is played by Hanna Herzsprung.
